Bee health - from the Ag Issues Forum to school classes

Mar 06, 2015
During Ag Issues Forum, students at a nearby school in Arizona learned about the honey bee’s importance.

The Bayer Bee Care Center presented its activities at the 10th annual Ag Issues Forum 2015, which took place in Phoenix from February 23rd to 25th. It was the first time the Bayer Bee Care Program participated. Numerous people visited the event, titled “Feeding Imagination Today, Nourishing Tomorrow”. Over 200 visitors learned about the future’s food supply by listening to 23 speakers. Among the speakers were Jason Brown, former NFL center-turned-farmer; former U.S. Congressman Thomas Latham; and former astronaut Dr.  Mae Jemison.
Alongside the event, Becky Langer-Curry, Bee Care health program manager and Sarah Myers, apiarist and Bee Care event manager at Bayer, visited the SanTan Elementary School in Chandler, Arizona. There, they spoke about why the honey bee is so important for food production.
Second graders learned how pollination works and fifth graders were introduced to the life cycle of the honey bee, the activities within a hive and also learned about the threats honey bees face. Both classes were given seed packages to plant flowers at home. The flowers will help feed bees in their neighborhoods.
